Everything is beautiful, but not everyone sees it—Confucius.
Only great artists are able to recognize the magic of the moment in everyday life and share it with others. They create poetry, paintings, music, and plays to convey this wonderful feeling to their audience. The love in a partner’s eyes and the joy of being with a loved one are so often hidden behind the veil of everyday worries.
There’s a widespread assumption that your level of political awareness should have an inverse correlation to your level of personal happiness, because of all the tyranny, injustice, poverty, genocide and ecocide. That it would be selfish to be happy in a world so deeply troubled.
But that’s rubbish. Nobody is helped by your misery. By depriving yourself of joy, you are only depriving the world of that much joy. Being more joyful makes you more energized, more helpful, and more useful to the cause, and it brings joy to everyone around you.

Happiness and beauty are two sides of the same coin. They’re so often overlooked, precisely because they’re everywhere. We focus our thoughts on problems that torment us, without seeing any real improvement. Then we try all the harder to drown out all the positive aspects of our lives.
Because the neighbor smiled kindly? She’s surely just trying to borrow money. Or did someone plant flowers on the small patch of ground in front of the apartment building? Surely they’ll sell them for a profit, like chrysanthemums on All Souls’ Day! In this way, we manage to disparage even the noblest impulses of those around us.
I don’t want to encourage anyone to ignore difficult situations in life. You have to face them head-on and think about how to respond. That’s clear, but you shouldn’t turn it into a constant ritual of self-pity—“how poor I am”—simply a helpless victim of the fate we create for ourselves. Each of us is surrounded by beauty, yet as Confucius observed 2,500 years ago—not everyone sees it.
