Whoever controls the flow of money wields the greatest possible power. Today, the only way to achieve such control is through digitalization. For the digital monitoring of all transactions, it is essential to accurately identify the individuals carrying out those transactions. Many countries in Europe have already introduced digital ID systems.

  • Albania: e-Albania – used to handle administrative matters, retrieve digital documents, and access public and medical services;
  • Austria: ID Austria – a digital ID card integrated into the government portal oesterreich.gv.at;
  • Belarus: Е-Паслуга – developed by the National Center for Electronic Services (NCES) and functions as a “government in a smartphone;”
  • Belgium: Itsme – a widely used, government-authorized private app that serves as the national standard for digital identification;
  • Croatia: mGrađani – allows users to complete administrative procedures, receive correspondence, and access documents directly via their smartphone;
  • Czech Republic: eDoklady – a Czech government app that allows users to identify themselves with a digital ID card;
  • Denmark: MitID – a digital ID and identity key used in public administration, banking, and by private providers;
  • Estonia: mRiik – the official mobile government app that allows users to store ID documents on their smartphones and access digital government services;
  • Finland: Suomi.fi – provides access to Finnish digital identity and administrative services;
  • France: France Identité – the official government app for identity verification and storing the digital ID card;
  • Germany: AusweisAppBund – the official German app for digital identity, linked to the eID function of the national ID card;
  • Greece: Gov.gr Wallet – operates within the gov.gr government portal and is used to store digital documents such as ID cards or driver’s licenses;
  • Hungary: DÁP – a government program and app that serves as a digital document wallet and gateway to e-government;
  • Italy: l’app dei servizi pubblici – the official government app developed by PagoPA, which serves as a digital interface between citizens and the public administration;
  • Latvia: eParaksts mobile – used for identity verification, logging into e-services, and digitally signing documents;
  • Lithuania: LT ID – used for signing documents and verifying identity in the digital space;
  • Netherlands: DigiD – a government app for logging in and handling administrative tasks online:
  • North Macedonia: m.Uslugi – a government “super app” that allows users to store key digital documents (including ID cards and driver’s licenses) directly on their smartphones;
  • Norway: BankID – allows users to generate an official document and a QR code;
  • Poland: mObywatel – the government’s official mobile app and internet service, serving as a digital document wallet and hub for public services;
  • Romania: ROeID – a digital identity portfolio that enables secure login to digital public services, identity verification, and digital signing of documents;
  • Serbia: ConsentID – a service for secure identity verification that operates within the Serbian e-government system;
  • Slovakia: Slovensko v mobile – used to handle administrative matters, for quick authentication, and for secure login to the central public administration portal slovensko.sk using the so-called mobileID;
  • Slovenia: eOsebna – manages digital identity and stores the virtual ID card;
  • Spain: MiDNI – a system that enables the storage of the digital ID card and identity management on a smartphone;
  • Sweden: BankID – a standard for digital identity verification operated by a banking consortium;
  • Switzerland: swiyu – a digital wallet for the secure storage of official documents, including the official state electronic identity (e-ID);
  • Ukraine: Diia – enables the storage of digital identification documents, the handling of administrative matters, and access to digital services;

This list is incomplete. For the sake of clarity, I have not included smaller countries such as Andorra, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, or the Vatican.

These mobile identity verification apps are a very convenient alternative to visiting government offices and presenting identification. In most cases, this can be done using a mobile phone.

Electronic ID (eID) usage varies in the EU, with 52% of citizens using it to access services – ranging from over 90% in Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Sweden and Estonia, to 15% or less in Germany, Slovakia, Bulgaria and Romania. Eurostat report based on data from March 2026.

FEBRUARY 2026 Banks begin the mandatory linking of accounts to the digital ID.
MARCH 2026 Major platforms (Amazon, Facebook, etc.) must offer the digital ID as a login option.
APRIL 2026 Introduction of the digital driver’s license. Physical documents become less important.
MAY 2026 The digital infrastructure for the euro is implemented in wallets (preparations for the rollout).
JUNE 2026 Government transactions are increasingly handled exclusively online. Without the ID, it is no longer possible to submit applications online.
JULY 2026 Cross-border recognition: The ID card becomes the standard travel document in the EU.
AUGUST 2026 Mobile phone and energy providers adapt their terms and conditions to accommodate digital identification.
SEPTEMBER 2026 Introduction of interfaces for “programmable payments” for businesses.
OCTOBER 2026 Completion of mandatory implementation in all EU member states.
NOVEMBER 2026 Final testing of the central EU asset registry (data matching).
DECEMBER 2026 Deadline: The digital identifier is de facto mandatory to gain access to digital life.
