There’s a lady who’s sure all that glitters is gold
and she’s buying a stairway to Heaven.
That’s how Led Zeppelin’s 1971 rock hit Stairway to Heaven begins. It’s about the false belief that happiness can be bought with money, as well as the search for spiritual truth and harmony with nature.
After staying on a low level for a long time, the silver price started to skyrocket in mid-2025. In January, silver reached a historic high. But already on the next day, the biggest precious metal crash since 2013 took place. How was this possible? It was followed by events like from a thriller. Source.
Contrary to what is often claimed, paper certificates for precious metals are not equivalent to gold or silver. The only thing that shines about them are the holograms designed to protect against counterfeiting. Much like money, they have an illusory value based on trust. So many of these certificates have already been issued that, should all holders suddenly demand to exchange them for real gold or silver, the banks’ total reserves of these metals would cover less than 10%—according to my estimate—of all claims.
It’s not without reason that the Chinese government banned trading in unbacked certificates last month. What do you think will happen if the Fed continues the quiet printing of dollars it has just begun in order to gradually buy up Japan’s debt? Source. The yen may be temporarily saved this way, but at what cost? The value of the dollar must fall—that’s an economic phenomenon. It can only be concealed temporarily.
It’s like a housewife constantly adding water to the soup pot so she can feed her hungry family longer. This helps temporarily get through the crisis, but in the end, all that’s left in the pot is water—which will likely run out soon as well.

Inflation doesn’t just mean a loss of value in money; above all, it means a loss of confidence in paper money. That is probably why alternative values—such as gratitude—emerge.

As a gesture of goodwill toward the Polish people, the President of Ukraine has decided to put new banknotes with a face value of “one gratitude” into circulation.
Speaking of banknotes: What do you think of the new 90-billion-euro bill?
