They have decided to hold peace talks. These are not direct talks, as the U.S. has the unpleasant habit of simply assassinating Iranian mediators. The Vice President of the United States is in no danger. Iran is a civilized country. It is the United States that has broken with a millennia-old tradition according to which envoys, even those of the enemy, are inviolable. The mediators from the two negotiating countries are not sitting face to face at a table.

“Iran has no cards to play,” claims the self-centered U.S. president. I, on the other hand, can point to several advantages that work in Iran’s favor.

  1. A breach of Israel’s defense line and the American warships supporting it. Israeli sources report that 80% of Iranian missiles penetrate the Iron Dome;
  2. Destruction of virtually all American military bases in the Persian Gulf;
  3. Destruction of U.S. radar systems;
  4. Full control over shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz;
  5. Three U.S. aircraft carriers are kept out of the Persian Gulf;
  6. Iran’s supposedly nonexistent air defense is capable of shooting down modern U.S. and Israeli fighter jets that are “invisible” to radar;
  7. Iran’s greatest trump card is time. Even if elections were to take place in the near future (the scheduled date is February 2028), the Iranian authorities need not worry about a lack of support.

What cards does President Trump still have up his sleeve? He has created a catastrophic situation in which he faces a choice: either admit defeat in the war against Iran and lose his already severely compromised popularity, or continue the war, which is bound to end in an even greater defeat. I have no sympathy for him, because this time he made the stupidest decision of his life when he supported Israel’s aggression against Iran. Supporters of the theory that Trump is playing a multidimensional chess game overlook a crucial aspect of his policy: He doesn’t listen; in fact, he even blames smart advisors when their advice doesn’t fit his delusional and unrealistic vision of a victorious war against Iran.

Disagreement.

The following East Frisian story illustrates how to extricate oneself from such a situation with dignity:

The East Frisians write to the Chinese:
“We hereby declare war on you. We have 5,000 soldiers and 500 tanks.”
Shortly thereafter, the Chinese reply:
“Dear East Frisians, we accept the declaration of war. We have five million soldiers and 500,000 tanks.”
After a brief consultation, the East Frisians write back:
“Dear Chinese, unfortunately we must cancel the war, because we don’t have enough beds for all the prisoners.”
