Graham Linehan is a popular Irish comedy writer. He makes fun of absurdity and has just become a victim of British absurdity.
There are many ways to return to Britain after a long-haul flight. Maybe you get a cup of tea, a mildly annoyed customs agent, and a taxi driver who tells you London’s gone to hell. Or, if you’re Graham Linehan, you’re met at Heathrow by five armed officers who then take you into custody over things you wrote on the internet. So begins an article in Reclaim The Net published yesterday under the title: Graham Linehan Arrested by Armed Police Over X Posts as UK Free Speech Crisis Deepens.
The most important characteristics of totalitarianism after artificial intelligence:
- ideology: an ideology that is binding for everyone, encompasses all aspects of life and cannot be questioned;
- One-party system: power is in the hands of a single party and its leader is often surrounded by a cult of personality;
- Control over society: The state controls the lives of citizens at all levels – from the public to the private sphere;
- Terror and policing: An extensive police apparatus and terror are the main tools to completely control citizens and combat resistance;
- Information monopoly: Complete control over the mass media is used to spread propaganda and shape reality;
- Centralized control of the economy: The economy is centralized and controlled by the state;
- Ideologization of life: Even culture and science are subordinated to the state ideology and serve as propaganda tools.
The characteristics of totalitarianism outlined above reflect the state of most European countries. You can debate the one-party system and centralized control of the economy, but when you look at the unanimity of the majority of political parties on issues such as the pandemic and the associated dictatorship in healthcare or the need for war with Russia, it is hard to call these parties anything else. Only the names of the puppets who lead them are different. That is, just like in a mono-party system.
Chinese totalitarianism at least has a sense of humor.
Just like the centralized economic control by bureaucrats in Brussels. Does the ban on coal mining in Poland or the dismantling of nuclear power plants in Germany have anything to do with market economy control? The conversion of the economy to war mode is also a military control method. The planned destruction of agriculture through EU regulations and bans is also an expression of centralized economic control.
Let’s call a spade a spade: The transition from a democratic system – with its advantages and disadvantages – to totalitarianism is well advanced. The latter only has advantages for its supporters.
