The world was confronted with frightening news: Trump became angry with former Russian President Medvedev and sent two state-of-the-art US Navy submarines equipped with nuclear warheads close to the enemy.

Who do you think Trump has scared away with his decision? Perhaps Putin will weaken and buckle under the pressure of US military power? Over half a century ago, I heard about a Cold War strategy to deter an enemy (for younger readers: the US/USSR) from launching a nuclear attack. This tactic was called the “dead hand.” Submarines equipped with nuclear warheads still ply the world’s seas and oceans. Their job is to receive well-coded, regular radio signals. In the absence of such a signal, the submarine commander is ordered to fire a series of nuclear missiles at pre-programmed targets in enemy territory. This method worked similarly on the US and USSR sides. Today, we have a third such submarine fleet—the Chinese one.
The target of the information wasn’t Russia, but public opinion. Why did Trump now start a “quarrel” with Medvedev—the former Russian president and deputy chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation? Both play similar roles in this theater. The goal is to create fear of nuclear war. Fearful citizens are more obedient to the authorities and don’t rebel against the increasingly powerful war ideas?

This isn’t the only reason. The recently released statistics from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics were in stark contrast to Trump’s propaganda about the US’s economic success. What do you do in such a situation? You have to punish the messenger, and that’s exactly what Trump did. He fired the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics for “weak data.” Such a dismissal of a statistics official is possible at any time, since these agencies, by definition, manipulate the published data. Since Ms. Erika McEntarfer portrayed Trump’s economic miracle in an unfavorable light, this was the only possible decision.
And it helped. Even the anti-Trump media write about the dismissal and the relocation of the two ships, forgetting that these and the rest of the American fleet are constantly on the move. Sometimes close to Russia, sometimes a bit farther away. Russian submarines are also on similar missions in the Pacific and Atlantic, at a reasonable distance from the US. And where is the Chinese submarine flotilla? I suspect that most of their submarines are “defending” Taiwan.

Political theater, played by bad actors. Many politicians imagine that the ignorant masses, as they call us, believe their every word, even when they spout nonsense that has absolutely nothing to do with what we observe around us. This is how myths arise about the climate, about a bad Putin and a good NATO, and about a human history tailored to current needs.

These days, skepticism is called for. Don’t believe anyone—not even me. After all, I could be wrong, too. The ability to at least randomly verify information is becoming increasingly important for a thinking person.
