A Polish cosmonaut expresses his thanks for the letters and good wishes he has received. The mail arrives at the International Space Station (ISS) every working day before midday. The letters are delivered to the cosmonauts for an additional fee by Mr. Postman from the Beatles song.

What else are we prepared to believe? Everything, it seems, as long as it is shown on television. Just like in the summer of 1969, when I too believed the big words of an American cosmonaut about one small step.

Doubts only arose many years later. Like most people, I didn’t check the reliability of information that was obvious to me at the time.

Getting back to the mail: Why should we be surprised that it gets into orbit at all when it does – for real this time – before 1920, it was actually possible to send children via the US Postal Service. However, certain conditions had to be met. First, the children could not weigh more than 50 pounds, and stamps were attached to their clothing as a form of payment. Surprisingly, it was often cheaper to send children by mail than to have them travel by train. Interestingly, the children traveled on a train during the journey, specifically in the mail coach, where they were supervised and cared for by postal workers. A notable example of this unusual practice is a trip of over 700 miles, from Florida to Virginia, which was covered with only 15 cents worth of stamps.
