Can you do the three-card trick? Scams have been around since time immemorial. I have no proof of this, but I am convinced that they existed long before there was money. Despite the misleading name, tricks are just as much a scam as brazen theft?
Tricks are also used in politics to push through laws that are largely rejected in parliament. It is precisely then that tricks have their greatest appeal, because they are effective. Such pragmatism was demonstrated by the Swiss Federal Council in connection with the forthcoming enforcement of the WHO’s International Health Regulations (IHR) by the Federal Council. The Federal Council has come up with something very special: it doesn’t want to publish the report on the results of the IHR consultation (revision of the WHO’s International Health Regulations) until the end of June 2025 – coincidentally just before Parliament leaves for its summer break. Some will then disappear somewhere between a swim in the Aare and a hiking hut, while others work on their sunburn with a piña colada in the Maldives. What remains: no debate.
The popular piña colada in Spain is simply a pineapple drink. This name is simply a marketing ploy. The famous British comedian and actor Charlie Chaplin, who lived in Switzerland from 1952, also used clever tricks in his films.
While we readily accept the tricks necessary for filming in movies, these have much more serious, even tragic consequences in politics.
Who among us doesn’t wish that a fairy godmother would appear to clear up this great swamp? And who actually believes in the existence of good fairies? Who would admit it? Because the vast majority of people would rather not get involved – let others clean up the Augean stables. When they clean up, the malcontents of today will claim that they have always actively supported them! But of course! If it weren’t for the fear….
