The title of this article, which is identical to the title of Deep Purple’s 1973 song, refers to a situation that is the result of Iran’s attacks on a number of US radar systems in the Middle East. The destruction of the THAAD radar systems (AN/TPY-2) has effectively blinded the entire air defense system throughout the region. You can find a lot of interesting information based on Chinese satellite images in the following video from the YouTube channel Money & People.

I know from experience that most readers don’t usually watch the films shown. That’s why I’ll briefly summarize the most important facts. In the first week of the war, Iranian drones destroyed radar installations in the Middle East worth almost $4 billion.
This amount does not take into account the three F-15E aircraft shot down ($282 million) and the damage to the CIA station in the embassy building in Riyadh and the consulates in Kuwait and Dubai. One of the many drones sent from Iran, which destroyed a facility in Qatar worth over a billion dollars, cost around $20,000. The cost ratio is 55,000 to 1.
However, it is not just the costs that are significant here. By damaging these radar installations, Iran has ensured that the entire air defense system has simply been blinded. The remaining missiles can still be fired, but they have no information about where to fly in order to destroy the incoming threat.
The production of these radar systems takes years. The US only has the option of relocating similar THAAD systems already installed in South Korea or Japan, which would of course significantly weaken the air defense of these countries and also require time for transport and assembly. Iran’s stockpile of drones does not appear to be running out anytime soon.
To Trump’s astonishment, Iran has not surrendered. Excuse me, we are the world’s greatest military power, so everyone we give orders to must immediately surrender unconditionally and beg for mercy! When this great power goes blind, the whole world will hear its cries, loud as the roar of a dying animal.
The US produces 20 to 25 Patriot missiles per month. It is not possible to increase production capacity because they are partly manufactured by hand. According to Scott Ritter, a former US officer and weapons inspector, the missile manufacturer opted for manual production in order to achieve a high price. Such a missile costs between $4 million and $5 million. As a rule, two Patriot missiles are fired to destroy an attacking missile – often just a dummy.
President Trump said that it was Iran that fired a missile at its own school in Minab, where so many children were killed. Iran also allegedly attacked its own water treatment plant. He obviously forgot to blame Iran for sinking an unarmed Iranian ship off the coast of Sri Lanka and murdering all the crew members. This is reminiscent of Joe Biden’s claim that Putin blew up Nord Stream 2.
