It was 1985. I was working as a computer scientist at a company in Vienna. During one of our many discussions, I shared my vision of the future with my colleagues. I said that there would come a time when it would be enough to put your wishes into words and the computer itself would create a suitable program. I’m not surprised that no one took me seriously at the time. It has taken forty years for this vision to take shape. Speech recognition combined with artificial intelligence is exactly the realization of my fantasy from many years ago.

However, people have hardly changed since then. There are only a few who really know what they want and can articulate it precisely. Back then, like most of us, I said I wanted to be healthy, and shortly afterwards I walked into a fast food restaurant to eat a hamburger and wash it down with a Coke.

And then there’s AI—artificial intelligence, which supposedly can do a lot of work for us. It can write a thesis without having to grapple with the subject matter. I assure you that I write my own articles. However, who could stop me from taking the easy route and asking Grok or ChatGTP to write a text on a selected topic? In the case of my blog, this would not be possible because the AI is based on a database that does not take into account or severely restricts logic that is independent of the general narrative.

AI has many costs that were simply ignored.  There are human costs. Such as unemployment and isolation.  People don’t learn data sources, their problems, or how to use them.  They don’t need to know grammar or how to write, and so on.  Then there are economic costs.  Much electricity is required.  Many data centers are being built or overbuilt, and people living in their vicinity are experiencing a doubling and tripling of electric bills, because demand has outrun supply.

The above quote is from an article published on Wednesday on paulcraigroberts.org: AI Is a Threat to All of Humanity.

Paul Craig Roberts (born April 3, 1939) is an American economist and author. He formerly held a sub-cabinet office in the United States federal government as well as teaching positions at several U.S. universities. He is a promoter of supply-side economics and an opponent of recent U.S. foreign policy. Source.

My attitude toward AI is not so negative, but I do see dangers associated with the introduction of this new technology. Apart from promoting mental laziness among many users, the greatest danger is that an industrial and financial consortium will gain control over the information that AI has access to.

This article provides a good description of the impact of AI on medicine. This new technology is also finding its way into other fundamental areas of life such as the justice system, policing, and government. It will probably be introduced earlier in services, commerce, and offices. The result will be unemployment—that much is certain. In commerce, AI could become an excellent tool for introducing a social credit system based on the Chinese model.
