Hamlet: Words, Words, Words …
William Shakespeare “Hamlet.”

Words evoke feelings. They can make you happy, but they can also kill you. There are people who can bore someone to death with words. Words are a means of communication, and like any tool, they obey the speaker’s intentions. How do you convince people of the merits of war? There are some constants in crafting a war narrative.

  • Create an enemy—there has to be an enemy. Without one, there is no war;
  • Name the enemy, preferably as the greatest threat to peace;
  • Portray the enemy as a worthless cockroach that must be exterminated;
  • Stoke fear, create “proof” of the enemy’s aggressive intentions;
  • Fueling the fear of fighting for survival;
  • Stoke fear by repeating—whether fictional or real—atrocities committed by the enemy;
  • Condemn pacifists as cowards or spies working for the enemy;
  • Exploit fear to portray a victorious battle against the enemy in the media.
  • Exploit fear to portray a victorious battle against the enemy in the media.
It’s depressing how calmly everyone here talks about another war, as if it were a foregone conclusion that simply needs to be accepted.
Ernest Hemingway, 1934

The way around this emotional difficulty is simple: Dehumanize the enemy! It happens virtually automatically, as soon as a particular group is declared the enemy, i.e., “them.” But it requires linguistic assistance: The bad folks must be given a name. and when they are, the name explodes in significance. Ka-boom! Now it’s a weapon. Anyone assigned that name is instantly dehumanized. Language is the initial weapon of war, and is an indispensable tool of those who wage it. Quote from an article by Robert Koehler published on October 20, 2025 on Antiwar.com Blog: Words Are the First Weapon of War.

The British tax office sent a taxpayer’s tax return back for correction. Under “dependent persons,” he had listed the following: 2.1 million illegal immigrants, 1.1 million drug addicts, 4.4 million unemployed, 0.9 million prisoners, and 650 idiots in Parliament. The citizen replied curtly: Who did I forget?

War preparations begin with the deliberate choice of words in the media. Their aim is always fear. Just as in the “health war” of 2020, a frightened person today will agree to even the most absurd proposals. It’s as if someone would commit suicide out of sheer panic at the prospect of death. Is the threat of war real? Hard to say. History teaches us: those who actively incite war achieve their goal sooner or later.

History is based on past times. Slowly but surely, the number of those who are becoming increasingly aware of the gravity of the situation is growing. There will always be people who close their eyes to the truth. Courageous and inquisitive people will shape the future of the world. Nature intended vultures to prey on ostriches.
