Civil fascism works so insidiously because it doesn’t require any content. It thrives solely on the fear of social ostracism. No one wants to be considered a “Nazi” or “threat,” so many keep quiet, even if they have good arguments. This not only poisons the debate but also nips any criticism in the bud. The result: a climate of self-censorship in which only those who dutifully join in the chorus speak out. Quoting from an article published yesterday on the platform of the Swiss association WIR: Civil fascism in Sunday format – How Telebasel frames thinking. Source.
For those who do not live in Switzerland, I would like to explain that Telebasel, to which the title of the article refers, is a Swiss television program.

The pattern is clear: those who have no more arguments resort to the method of exclusion. In this way, every skeptical voice is morally eradicated instead of being examined for its advantages and disadvantages. Debating is unfashionable today. Why bother when you can stick a patch with the words Nazi, conspiracy theorist or just idiot on it. If I believe that, then no argument is necessary at all. I’m right because I say so, and that’s that.
Insults don’t impress me, not even threats. During a brief conversation with Polish historian Dr. Marcin Masny at Network Expo Poland 2025, I heard him say: “You can call me an idiot, but please justify it.”

Criticism that is countered by censorship can become the most valuable feedback if it is in some way supported by arguments. It was Marcin Masny who asked for a critical reading in the dedication of a book bought from him. You can agree or disagree with him, but if you want to develop intellectually, you should practise the art of argumentation. Otherwise we remain at a standstill: And yet we know that he who stands still goes backwards. Because the world is moving forwards. In which direction? That is another question.
